Anthony Muise, 53, was found on 24 February in the Manchester Ship Canal near the Imperial War Museum North in Trafford Park. He had a puncture wound to his chest and his death is being treated as "unexplained".

Anthony was gay and socialised in gay communities, including Manchester's Gay Village and in Edinburgh, police said. He also spent time in London and Ripon, North Yorkshire.

One of Mr Muise's friends, Karen Hawkins, 50, of London, Ontario, said he was attacked in Manchester on a previous trip in 2008. It had left him worried he had a degenerative brain condition. "He was convinced he was going to die and he went to Manchester. I'm pretty sure he chose to go there after what happened two years previously, probably in a fatalistic kind of way."
